Coosa Backcountry Trail
A long loop in the mountains in and around Vogel State Park
Description:
This long and strenuous hike is strongly recommended by the rangers of Vogel State Park as a backpacking trip, not a day hike. A permit is required to hike, but there is no fee for camping along the trail.
The trail ascends to Burnett Gap, then on to Ben’s Knob, then climbs both Coosa Bald and Slaughter Mountain.
Hiking the loop counterclockwise is recommended. Poison ivy grows along the first half of the trail (in the counterclockwise direction) so keep an eye out for it.
