Popular Boulder filled trail in Shenandoah National Park


Description:

Old Rag is one of the most popular trail in Shenandoah National Park and has special rules associated with that popularity. There are fees to use the trail during certain weekends and holidays in Summer/Fall. It can be crowded, but the views and rock scrambles are worth it. The park service estimates 100,000 people climb to the top annually.

Many hike the trail in a counter clockwise direction to face the rock scrambles oing downhill. The trail none the less requires physical ability, with somesections being just a narrow rock ledge to hike on separating you from a long fall onto a pile of loose rocks below.

This trail features scenic views from the 3,268 ft top of Rag Mountain, to the boulder field at 2,000 ft down to the trail head at 1,000 ft there is plenty of changes in scenery along this trail.
