Freeman Trail
Connects to the Appalachian Trail on each end
Description:
The trail connects to the Appalachain Trail at Bird Gap and Flatrock Gap, essentially providing an easier path between the two as it bypasses Blood Mountain and Slaughter Gap. If you so desire, you can make a loop of the trail by traveling from Flatrock Gap to Blood Mountain and Bird Gap via the AT, then bearing left and returning to Flatrock Gap via the Freeman Trail. (Of course, the 6.7-mile loop may also be hiked in the opposite (clockwise) direction.)
The easiest access to Freeman trail is by the Byron Herbert Reece Trail, whose 0.7-mile length is included in the loop description above.
